Does feeding area restriction inhibit social learning of toxic weed ingestion in cattle?

Social learning from peers can trigger herd-wide intoxication with white locoweed (Oxytropis sericea), an alkaloid-synthesizing herbaceous legume that grows on rangelands of western North America. We conducted an experiment to test the hypothesis that restriction of the area allocated to animals to feed in would inhibit social facilitation of locoweed ingestion in yearling heifers. Eight heifers that avoided white locoweed (LA) and eight heifers that readily consumed it (LE) were selected from a pool of 40 cross-bred heifers and were randomly assigned to the social facilitation or social interference treatment groups. We conducted 200 10-min feeding trials in three 5-day phases (pre-treatment, treatment, post-treatment) during which animals were presented with a set of bowls arrayed in a test arena, some of which contained ground wheat straw and others contained air-dried ground white locoweed. During the pre-treatment (days 1 to 5) and the post-treatment phases (days 11 to 15) non-social trials were conducted in which the feeding behavior of individual animals was investigated in an 80 m2 arena containing 12 feeding bowls. During the treatment phase (days 6 to 10) social learning trials were conducted in which LA + LE pairs from the social interference group were exposed to 12 bowls of food distributed in an 80 m2 arena intended to induce social interference, and LA + LE pairs from the social facilitation group were exposed to 36 bowls of food distributed in a 240 m2 arena intended to permit social facilitation. During pre-treatment phase, LA heifers consumed detectably less locoweed and wheat straw and exhibited lower preference for locoweed than LE (P ⩽ 0.05) although wheat straw preference of LA and LE was similar. During social learning trials (treatment phase), LA in the social interference group visited similar number of locoweed bowls (mean ± s.e.m.: 0.2 ± 0.12) as they had during non-social learning (0.2 ± 0.20). Conversely, LA heifers in the social facilitation group visited detectably more locoweed bowls during social learning trials (1.6 ± 0.46) compared with the pre-treatment phase (0.2 ± 0.16). Correlation between daily number of locoweed bowls visited by LA and LE during social learning trials was detected in the social facilitation (r = 0.70; P < 0.01), but not in the social interference group (r = 0.15; P = 0.52). During testing trials (post-treatment phase), locoweed and wheat straw intake and preference of LA and LE in both treatment groups was similar. Manipulation of the feeding environment delayed, but did not inhibit social learning of toxic weed ingestion in this study.

The amounts and rates of release of the different categories of soil K were measured on 21 soils from field experiments in England, Wales and West Germany using a calcium saturated cation exchange resin. The soils contained various amounts of exchangeable, fixed and matrix K; some contained no fixed K at all. These amounts could be qualitatively related to the clay contents of the soils.
Regression analyses of K removed at harvest by spring barley, winter wheat, field beans and sugar beet, grown in the field experiments, were made on the quantities measured by the Ca-resin method and on K exchangeable to M ammonium acetate (EK). The Ca-resin method proved a better predictor of K availability than EK for all four crops. A multiple regression of the amount and rate of release of exchangeable K, and the rate of release of fixed K, as measured by Ca-resin, gave the best correlation with K removed. The contribution of fixed K to the regression increased with the demand of the crop for K and with the length of time the crops had been grown without K fertilizer. For the cereals, fixed K appeared to be either completely available or unavailable depending on whether its rate of release exceeded a critical value characteristic of each crop.
The Ca-resin method is probably the best method available for measuring K reserves. It is, perhaps, too laborious for routine soil analysis, but could be used to characterize the long-term K release properties of a soil.

Nitrogen deposition and its contribution to nitrogen cycling and associated soil processes

Human activity has greatly perturbed the nitrogen cycle through increased fixation by legumes, by energy and fertilizer production, and by the mobilization of N from long-term storage pools. This extra reactive N is readily transported through the environment, and there is increasing evidence that it is changing ecosystems through eutrophication and acidification. Rothamsted Experimental Station, UK has been involved in research on N cycling in ecosystems since its inception in 1843. Measurements of precipitation composition at Rothamsted, made since 1853, show an increase of nitrate and ammonium N in precipitation from 1 and 3 kg N ha−1 yr−1, respectively, in 1855 to a maximum of 8 and 10 kg N ha−1 yr−1 in 1980, decreasing to 4 and 5 kg N ha−1 yr−1 today. Nitrogen inputs via dry deposition do, however, remain high. Recent measurements with diffusion tubes and filter packs show large concentrations of nitrogen dioxide of c. 20 μg m−3 in winter and c. 10 μg m−3 in summer; the difference is linked to the use of central heating, and with variations in wind direction and pollutant source. Concentrations of nitric acid and particulate N exhibit maxima of 1·5 and 2 μg m−3 in summer and winter, respectively. Concentrations of ammonia are small, barely rising above 1 μg m−3.
Taking deposition velocities from the literature gives a total deposition of all measured N species to winter cereals of 43·3 kg N ha−1 yr−1, 84% as oxidized species, 79% dry deposited. The fate of this N deposited to the very long-term Broadbalk Continuous Wheat Experiment at Rothamsted has been simulated using the SUNDIAL N-cycling model: at equilibrium, after 154 yr of the experiment and with N deposition increasing from c. 10 kg ha−1 yr−1 in 1843 to 45 kg ha−1 yr−1 today, c. 5% is leached, 12% is denitrified, 30% immobilized in the soil organic matter and 53% taken off in the crop. The ‘efficiency of use’ of the deposited N decreases, and losses and immobilization increase as the amount of fertilizer N increases. The deposited N itself, and the acidification that is associated with it (from the nitric acid, ammonia and ammonium), has reduced the number of plant species on the 140-yr-old Park Grass hay meadow. It has also reduced methane oxidation rates in soil by c. 15% under arable land and 30% under woodland, and has caused N saturation of local woodland ecosystems: nitrous oxide emission rates of up to 1·4 kg ha−1 yr−1 are equivalent to those from arable land receiving >200 kg N ha−1 yr−1, and in proportion to the excess N deposited; measurements of N cycling processes and pools using 15N pool dilution techniques show a large nitrate pool and enhanced rates of nitrification relative to immobilization. Ratios of gross nitrification[ratio ]gross immobilization might prove to be good indices of N saturation.

Abstract
In a prospective, randomised, controlled trial to determine whether comprehensive lifestyle changes affect coronary atherosclerosis after 1 year, 28 patients were assigned to an experimental group (low-fat vegetarian diet, stopping smoking, stress management training, and moderate exercise) and 20 to a usual-care control group. 195 coronary artery lesions were analysed by quantitative coronary angiography. The average percentage diameter stenosis regressed from 40-0 (SD 16-9)% to 37-8 (16-5)% in the experimental group yet progressed from 42-7 (15-5)% to 46-1 (18-5)% in the control group. When only lesions greater than 50% stenosed were analysed, the average percentage diameter stenosis regressed from 61-1 (8-8)% to 55-8 (11-0)% in the experimental group and progressed from 61-7 (9-5)% to 64-4 (16-3)% in the control group. Overall, 82% of experimental-group patients had an average change towards regression. Comprehensive lifestyle changes may be able to bring about regression of even severe coronary atherosclerosis after only 1 year, without use of lipid-lowering drugs. Lancet 1990; 336: 129-33.
Introduction
The Lifestyle Heart Trial is the first randomised, controlled clinical trial to determine whether patients outside hospital can be motivated to make and sustain comprehensive lifestyle changes and, if so, whether regression of coronary atherosclerosis can occur as a result of lifestyle changes alone. Over twenty clinical trials are being carried out to determine whether the progression of coronary atherosclerosis can be modified; in all of these, cholesterol-lowering drugs, plasmapheresis, or partial ileal bypass surgery are the primary interventions.
We carried out trials in 1977 and 1980 to assess the short-term effects of lifestyle changes on coronary heart disease with non-invasive endpoint measures (improvements in cardiac risk factors, functional status, myocardial perfusion, and left ventricular function). However, the subjects of those studies were not living in the community during the trial, and we did not use angiography to assess changes in coronary atherosclerosis.
Patients and methods
Patients with angiographically documented coronary artery disease were randomly assigned to an experimental group or to a usual-care control group. Experimental-group patients were prescribed a lifestyle programme that included a low-fat vegetarian diet, moderate aerobic exercise, stress management training, stopping smoking, and group support. Control-group patients were not asked to make lifestyle changes, although they were free to do so. Progression or regression of coronary artery lesions was assessed in both groups by quantitative coronary angiography at baseline and after about a year.
